Welcome to Hazel Class
Class Organisation and Learning Approach
Class Hazel consists of 10 pupils and 4 members of the teaching team. The pupils are divided into two groups according to their individual learning pathways: semi-formal learners and pre-formal learners.
The semi-formal group follows semi-formal curriculum. Pupils develop their skills in English and Maths every day, while in the afternoons they focus on foundation subjects (PSHE, RE, Science, Geography, History, DT, Art, Music, Computing). Their learning is supported through a range of practical and enriching experiences, including swimming. Pupils participate in sensory circuit activities twice a day and take part in the Attention Autism programmes once a week. Activities are personalised and tailored to meet each pupil`s individual needs.
The pre-formal group which remains at Knowsley Central School follows the Engagement Model. Their learning focuses on five key areas: Making Connections, Communication, Functional Movement, Sensory, and Self and Emotions. Each day of the week is dedicated to a different area, although learning is highly cross-curricular and naturally incorporates skills from several areas.
These pupils learn through exploration and engagement. Activities are child-led, exploratory and adapted to reflect pupils` interests, communication styles and individual needs. They have opportunities to access specialist areas around the school including Soft-Play, Light Room, Immersive Room as well as sessions led by PE Everton coaches.
All pupils take part in daily `Good Morning` session, where both groups come together and engage in shared session providing opportunities to build relationships and participate in common class experience. Once a week the class visits the Sensory Hive where pupils have further opportunities to socialise, play and interact with one another in a supportive sensory environment.
Across both pathways, our approach ensures that learning is personalised, meaningful and responsive to the needs of every pupil., enabling all children to participate, communicate and explore.
