English Interventions
Write From the Start
Write from the Start is a unique programme to develop the fine motor and perceptual skills necessary for effective handwriting. Write From the Start lays a firm foundation for accurate handwriting through a programme of activities developed specifically for children with fine motor skill and perceptual difficulties.
Finger Gyms
What is Finger Gym? Finger Gym is a comprehensive programme of developmental games, stories, rhymes and activities to improve fine motor skills, language and handwriting. It helps to develop strong, flexible fingers, hands and arms. It promotes better hand-eye coordination, differentiated movement and manual dexterity.
Thriving Reading
Thriving Readers is a highly successful reading intervention used at Knowsley Central School. It is aimed at increasing a pupil’s key word knowledge, developing their fluency and building their confidence.
It takes place three times a week on a 1-1 basis and each session is 20 minutes long. The whole programme lasts for ten weeks and the pupils are assessed at the beginning and again at the end of the intervention.
The pupils have the opportunity to play key word games, flashcard activities, as well as reading two books matched to their reading ability.
Pupils really enjoy Thriving Readers and it is a pleasure to see their reading ability and confidence grow throughout the intervention.
Please see Speech and Language and Occupational Therapist pages on website for further details of interventions related to these areas.
Maths Interventions
Plus 1
Plus 1 is used in school for children who we feel would benefit from repeated maths practice. It is designed to appeal to all age ranges using clear language and repetition. It follows a structed format, with clear explanations.
Plus 1 covers basic number work, such as counting forwards with numbers up to 10, adding and subtracting numbers up to 10, and introducing, doubling and halving.
When working on Plus 1 the children have to answer each question correctly three times on three different days, they are encouraged to work without using pencils and paper to try and develop their mental maths ability.
We aim for the children to complete Plus 1, four to five times a week, with each session lasting approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Power of 2
Power of 2 is used to continue to develop the number skills of pupils we feel would benefit from repeated maths practice. Again it is designed to appeal to all age ranges, using clear language and repetition of skills.
Power of 2 begins with teaching number bonds to 10, and then moves onto introducing doubling, halving, addition and subtractions, rounding numbers, multiplying and dividing. It then introduces fractions and looks at worded problems and time. It covers all aspects of mental maths needed for the Mathematic Curriculum.
As with completing Plus 1 the children have to answer each question correctly three times on three different days, they are encouraged to work without using pencils and paper to try and develop their mental maths ability.
We aim for the children to complete Power of 2 four to five times a week, with each session lasting 10 to 15 minutes.
